Mugdock Castle is Charleston's landmark, infused with history and charm. The two buildings, consisting of a Gothic Winter Hall (c. 1891) and a Romanesque Summer Hall (c. 2009), are joined by a central staircase tower to form the region's true low-country beach castle. This house is one of the most solidly built buildings of the time and truly captures the luxury of design simplicity that reflects the comfort and practicality of a full-fledged modern beach chateau. 


What happened to Mugdock Castle?

The accommodation remains at Maddock Country Park and the ruins are open to the public. The remaining 14th-century tower of the castle has been converted into a museum.


Can I go to Mugdock Castle?

Mugdock Castle and surrounding grounds can be rented (minimum 28 days). The 6 bedrooms and 5 and a half dressing rooms (baths) can accommodate 12 people with 2 queen beds, 2 double beds and 4 single beds (2 bunk beds). 


Who owned Mugdock Castle?

Mugdock Castle was built by the Grahams by 1372. In the 17th century, its owner was James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose, the Royal Commander, and the castle was attacked many times accordingly. Later, a house and a mansion were built on the premises.
