Crawl Space Mold Removal: Mildew

Mildew is not as threatening to your health or as detrimental to your property as certain varieties of poisonous mold (black mold, for example), but it should still be handled seriously and removed as soon as possible to avoid negative health impacts and/or cosmetic damage to your home.

What is the difference between mildew and mold?

Mildew is a type of surface fungus that appears as a patch of gray or even white fungus on the surface of a moist place. Mildew can be removed with a scrubbing brush and a store-bought cleanser. Mold, on the other hand, comes in a variety of colors and is usually the product of a much larger infestation.

Mildew is caused by a variety of factors.

Mildew, which is produced by dampness and moisture, can develop on any organic matter, including wood, walls, and wallpaper. Mildew may thrive in the moist winter months when the heating is turned up high and the windows are shut tight – and as the weather heats up, humidity can aid the process along.

Is it safe to inhale mildew?

Mold exposure can have negative health consequences for certain people. Mold spores are constantly present in the air we breathe, but widespread mold pollution can be harmful to our health. Mold can induce allergy and respiratory symptoms when inhaled.

How does mildew appear?

Mildew is typically white or gray in color, dry, and powdery in appearance. It looks to be flat at all times. Mold, on the other hand, is usually elevated and comes in a variety of colors, including green, red, blue, and black. Mold has a stronger, more pungent odor than mildew, which some people relate to damp socks.

What is causing the mildew in my home?

Molds are always present in the air, but mildew-causing molds require moisture and specific temperatures to flourish. They thrive in hot, humid summer conditions, especially in enclosed spaces. Because of the moisture in the building components, these molds are also prone to grow in a new house.
