Learn more about Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, SC

The Sullivan's Island Lighthouse, often known as the Charleston Light, is located on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, at the northern entrance to Charleston Harbor.

Can I climb the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse?

The Sullivan's Island Lighthouse is still in operation, and unlike the historic lighthouse structure, which has hundreds of stairs for personnel to climb up, Coast Guard personnel work regularly to maintain the lights. There is an elevator and air conditioning to allow you to check. It runs without excessive heat or long climbs.

Can I stay at a lighthouse in South Carolina?

Today, the beautifully restored lighthouse is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that actually accommodates guests. Guests will sleep exactly where the lighthouse keeper was sleeping when the lighthouse officially went into operation between 1873 and 1924.

How high is the lighthouse on Sullivan's Island?

The 163-foot triangular lighthouse is not the first lighthouse built on Sullivan's Island. Records show that in 1848 two "Pole Beacon Lights" were built near Fort Mortley near the southern tip of the island, raised every night to guide sailors across Charleston Bar, and lowered the next morning.
