Learn more about Rainbow Row, SC

Rainbow Row refers to a row of thirteen brightly colored historic homes in Charleston, South Carolina. The residences are located on East Bay Street, from 79 to 107 East Bay Street, north of Tradd St. and south of Elliott St. Rainbow Row got its name from the rainbow colors that were used to repair the buildings in the 1930s and 1940s. It is a popular tourist destination and one of Charleston's most photographed locations.

What is the origin of Rainbow Row?

Rainbow Row was built around 1740 and used to be located in the city's waterfront region in the 18th century. The houses, which are located between 83 and 107 East Bay Street, used to be owned by merchants who had stores on the ground level and lived above them.

Is there anyone who lives on Rainbow Row?

Rainbow Row is now considered premium real estate in Charleston. Rainbow Row has only 14 residences, thus these properties seldom come available for sale. A few of these townhouses have been transformed into condos floor by floor, but the majority have remained as three-story townhouses (also called row houses).

Rainbow Row was painted for what reason?

Many people have theorized on the true cause of Rainbow Row's color change. According to one story, the homes were painted in varied pastel colors to help drunk sailors find their way home. Others say the various tints were used by merchants to indicate what kinds of goods they sold.

When did Rainbow Row get its paint job done?

Most tourists (but not you!) are surprised to learn that Rainbow Row wasn't always in such dazzling technicolor splendor. In fact, the buildings were not painted in pastel colors until 1931.
