North of Charleston, South Carolina, sits the Francis Marion National Forest. It was named after revolutionary battle hero Francis Marion, also known as the Swamp Fox by the British. It is totally contained within the ecoregion of the Middle Atlantic coastal woods. In addition, the park is completely surrounded by subtropical coniferous forest.
The Charleston County Greenbelt Program added 1,450 acres to the Francis Marion National Forest. The tract's roads and walkways will improve access to the forest for hiking, birding, and hunting, while also providing natural habitat for a variety of local animals.
A variety of animals can be found on the Francis Marion, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. It covers almost 259,000 acres and provides a diverse range of recreational options, including hiking, bike, motorcycling, and canoe routes, as well as rifle ranges and a boat launch.
Otters, beavers, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, and deer are among the most common mammals seen. The American alligator is one of the most frequently asked about critters found on the Francis Marion.
